Dr. McDermott received his Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from the University of Mississippi in 2015. Prior to earning his Ph.D., Dr. McDermott completed his pre-doctoral residency at the University of Mississippi Medical Center and the G.V. (Sonny) Montgomery VA Medical Center Consortium.

Dr. McDermott provides evidence-based cognitive and behavioral treatments for depression, anxiety and trauma-related disorders (i.e. PTSD), physical health conditions such as chronic pain, and substance use disorders. In particular, Dr. McDermott has received advanced training in the administration of cognitive behavioral therapy for depression, exposure-based treatments for anxiety disorders, prolonged exposure for PTSD, and acceptance-based interventions for chronic pain. Among others, Dr. McDermott has provided care in numerous settings including residential drug treatment facilities, Veterans Administration hospitals, and anxiety disorder clinics.

In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. McDermott is an assistant professor at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette where he conducts research on roles of stress, anxiety, and trauma-related disorders on physical health, particularly migraine and other chronic pain conditions, and the mechanisms by which they contribute to medical problems and health risk behaviors such as substance use. In this regard, Dr. McDermott utilizes his clinical research and up-to-date research literature to inform his evidence-based practice.
